Again this year, I am hosting a table at The Blue Bench’s “Changing the Conversation” Breakfast on Friday, October 9th from 7:30-9:00 a.m. at the Denver Athletic Club (1325 Glenarm Place, Denver, CO) in the Grand Ballroom (4th Floor). Will you please join me? This is an opportunity for you to learn more about the sexual assault support and prevention work that The Blue Bench is doing within our community. In the past couple of years, we have been able to join forces nationally to bring more strength and growth to our local efforts.

We are making great progress in building awareness around a subject that is very difficult for many people to discuss. The reason why our work cannot end, is because sexual assault and sexual violence still occurs, many times unreported and with victims not receiving the support they need after a major life-changing event. Back in April, we held a very successful event in Denver and were grateful for the support of the community. The “Start By Believing” campaign was introduced to many at that event and it’s gaining momentum. Take a look here to learn a little more> Warning: It may give you chills as it did to me.

After watching the short video, you might better understand why victims decide not to come forward about their assault and/or why sexual violence and rape is significantly under reported. We must make it a safer place for all people to talk about a difficult subject. Not only does The Blue Bench support victims, their families and friends, but the organization believes in prevention and advocacy. At our last board meeting, I was very excited to hear about some of our new prevention and education programs that the staff at The Blue Bench are working hard towards implementing in our community.

Do you know what a bystander is and how a bystander can be an important aspect to our work in preventing sexual violence? A bystander is neither a potential perpetrator nor victim, but instead a person who would want to be part of the solution. This can be you! All people can help prevent sexual assault by becoming an active bystander and our Pathways to Prevention Programs teach students, adults, professionals, all people, how to:

• Understand and notice signs, media, and culture that encourage inappropriate sexual behavior/violence
• Develop skills to safely intervene as a bystander
• Understand their own barriers to bystander intervention
• Identify, empathize, safely intervene and support a friend/loved-one
• Learn about local resources available to both survivors of sexual violence and their loved-ones

We need your care and support to continue funding these efforts. The breakfast is free to attend; however, I hope that once you see and hear from staff and supporters of the organization you will consider making a contribution The Blue Bench. Most importantly, I want you to come and find out about the work we are doing. I truly appreciate your past support and hope you might help me continue to change the conversation around sexual assault and sexual violence. Together, we can make the world a safer place.

The Blue Bench Breakfast 2015

We must take victims seriously and not further victimize them when they decide to stand up for themselves! For over 30 years, The Blue Bench (formerly called RAAP – Rape Awareness and Assistance Program), has been Denver’s only comprehensive sexual assault prevention and support center. The organization serves both female and male victims and their families/friends as they progress on their journey toward healing. Cost should never be a barrier to receive support, so the support services are provided free of charge. Domestic violence and sexual assault often go hand-in-hand and most of us are aware of the recent, prevailing news stories.

Will you please let me know if you are able to attend asap so that I may reserve you a seat? Please kindly RSVP to me directly at, so that I can ensure you a seat at my table. If you would like to learn more about The Blue Bench, please checkout the website> . Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

I Missed It

So International Women's Day came and went and I didn't acknowledge it. Apparently, I'm not the hard-fast feminist that I thought I was...ha. I finally get a day, um, I think.?. It was March 8th. Had there been fireworks and a huge-ass party, I would have noticed. Did you miss it also?

Since I have no kids, I'm not a sweetest, a boss, a flag, an admin assistant, have no Valentine, etc there are really no other dates that more directly apply to me. So Happy Belated International Women's Day!

A token of my late celebration includes one of my favorite quotes (brought to my attention by an amazing female friend):

"Precious jewel, you glow, you shine, reflecting all the good things in the world." ~Maya Angelou

Don't ever let your brilliance wane. Don't ever stand in the shadow of another. Shine on girlfriends!

Tough News for the Pocket Book

The Denver Post printed an article yesterday that compared Denver to a city famous for outlandish home prices and cost of living. "Denver matches San Francisco for highest inflation rate in 2014...What Denver shared with San Francisco was a shortage of housing that drove up rents and home prices. Houston and Denver, to a lesser degree, benefited from the domestic oil boom last year." According to article author, Aldo Svaldo.

How does this translate in lay terms? Invest in Denver now, but then compete with dozens of others trying to do the same thing at the same time. Denver is in high demand. The metro area has grown by 10,000+ people over the past year.

"Denver-Boulder-Greeley area rents showed a 5.9 percent increase in the second half of the year, while a comparable measure for homeowner costs rose 5.1 percent." Ugh! Read the entire article for more info...

Fashion Forward Denver is less of an Oxymoron

Today at the Economic Development Council meeting held by the Downtown Denver Partnership, I learned that Uni Qlo and Zara are considering Denver as an emerging market, possibly moving here by end of 2015. This means that Denver is making an appearance in affordable fashion-ware, which makes me and many of my friends even more excited about living in a terrific city. Whoohoo! Only problem is, a best kept secret is spreading...

It's Not Too Late in Colorado

Colorado is a different real estate market than other states and we are doing well in comparison to many other states. "The message is clear that if you are looking to buy a home in Denver, you have not missed the boat as there will be several more years of appreciation in front of us and if you are thinking of selling you likely have more equity in your property than you realize..."
