Concerned LoDo Neighbors for Equitable Routing of 18th Street Bus Traffic

Hi Blog Followers!

We have created an e-petition to voice our concerns to the RTD staff and Board. We need your help right now. Will you please add your name to the list? It takes 5 seconds. Please keep reading if you would like more information about this important issue.

Whether you live, work or play in LoDo, this WILL effect you. RTD is moving through its public hearing process to reroute the 0 & 15 and create stops for the FreeMetroRide. The City predicts the amount of traffic on 18th Street will go from a current load of 464 in the evening to 695 – a significant portion of this comes from the bus traffic that will quite literally rattle many buildings.

To better explain my current position, I’m a resident in the IceHouse and part of a LoDo community coalition and we are trying to gain support from other neighbors, stakeholders, businesses and friends in the area. We are asking for support for equitable routing of RTD bus traffic through LoDo. RTD is currently planning to route numerous buses from Union Station, directly next to our building/parking garage and down 18th Street.

Recently, I sent out the following notice to many of my friends, neighbors, and the LoDoNA Board of Directors (please feel free to copy and pass along to your network):

We have created an e-petition to voice our concerns to the RTD staff and Board. We need your help right now. Will you please add your name to the list? It takes 5 seconds.

Upon hitting ‘sign’ on the website the wording in the boxed text will be automatically sent to the RTD Board and Staff that will approve or disapprove the route changes.

We are excited that downtown Denver and LoDo continue to be revitalized and experience great new development. The 2 new Union Station wing buildings and redevelopment of Union Station will significantly increase the traffic along 18th and Wynkoop alone. With bus traffic also increasing, we are afraid that our neighborhood will become unbearably congested with additional noise and air pollution. I’m sure that you’ve experienced Rockies traffic in LoDo. Well, RTD has not researched the issue enough and we feel that RTD is not prepared for the problems that will arise. It makes sense to us that more buses can be routed out of LoDo through newer infrastructure via Chestnut vs the historical area of downtown.

We’ve attended the hearings to date and heard all sorts of political explanations as to why other streets can’t take these routes or at least share the burden. This is traffic that LoDo is not used to having on our narrow streets. Some of the parking will be decreased along these areas as well. This is our next best step and we truly appreciate your time and help.

Thank you!
Kirstan, Concerned LoDo Resident
