LoDo Lights Attract Many and Brightens the Neighborhood

LoDo Lights Will Be Turning Two!

In March of 2009, Denver was introduced to LoDoLights, a world-class light art installation by Virginia Folkestad on the iconic Manny’s Bridge in the heart of LoDo. Manny's Bridge crosses over the rails at the west of end of Wynkoop Street. The project is a unqiue partnership between the neighborhood, who funded the artwork, and the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs who maintains the art. As successful and popular as the installation is, the project is not yet completed according to the original design, and LoDoNa (Lower Downtown Neighborhood Association) is raising funds to finish the project. The goal is to celebrate the completion at the anniversary in the Spring!

The final phase includes two additional LED lights, new and edgier projected art and further interactivity. Additionally, the world’s best programming technology is now available, which will allow for an even more impressive experience. This phase will also include a permanent sign at the bridge describing the art and all sponsors.

LoDoNa expresses a great deal of gratitude to all who have made the first phase a success and if you would like to donate to complete this amazing project, please use this secure link >

By the way, LoDo Lights was featured in an international online magazine, Enlighter in June 2010. For the article and great photos, go to Current 3 By Virginia Folkestad >

Holiday Shopping Safety Tips

The Denver Police Department would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. To make this special time of year a great experience for you and your family, we are asking that a few special precautions be taken. Please find the below listed driving and safety tips:

Holiday Tidings
Dress Down:
Dress casually and comfortably. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

Shop Together:
Shop with friends and family if at all possible. Try not to shop alone, especially at night.

Educate Your Kids:
Teach kids what to do if you get separated. Tell them to find a store clerk or security person.

Tell someone where you are going and how long you will be gone. Let them know if you change your schedule.

Park Smart:
Park close to the store. Avoid dark and secluded areas.

Lock the Car:
Keep doors locked and windows closed. Remember your keys.

Stay Alert:
Remember where you park your car. Be aware of suspicious cars and people.

Watch Your Purse:
Hold your purse close to your body or use a front pocket if carrying a wallet. Preferably wear a fanny pack.

Avoid Cash:
Never flash large amounts of money. Try to use checks or credit cards instead of cash.

Use Credit Cards Safely:
Beware of identity theft and keep receipts safe. Record credit card numbers at home and guard PIN numbers.

Shop in Small Doses:
Make regular trips to the car. Avoid carrying too many packages that put you off balance and make you a target.

Returning to the Parking Lot:
Have your car keys out when returning to your car. Check the back seat and under the car before getting in.

Hide Packages:
Store packages in the trunk of the car. Put your packages in the trunk before you drive to your next location not when you arrive. Never leave them visible inside the car.

Never go home if you think you are being followed or if you feel threatened. Go to a busy well-lit safe place.

Don't Play Hero:
Comply with a thief's demands. Record an accurate description for law enforcement: height, weight, eye color, hair color, scars, tattoos, clothing, and license plate.

Woodshake Roofs

This article came to my attention because earlier this summer, I had clients nearly purchase a home with a woodshake roof. We had many concerns about it so that is why I feel it's important to share this information.

5 things you must know about a woodshake roof

1. They are EXPENSIVE! Woodshake is a very expensive shingle to replace, and with changes in the roofing industry there are many superior products.

2. They are not real popular with insurance carriers. In fact many won't insure a wood shake anymore, and the rest are reducing coverage to depreciated value, not the replacement cost.

3. They are a Fire Hazard, in fact a firefighter once told me that a woodshake fire is a lost cause and can not be stopped in most cases.

4. They are very hard to properly maintain, they require an annual oiling which property owners rarely do, reducing the life and look of the shingle significantly.

5. When they incur hail damage, there is a short window of time in which a claim can be filed. The split shingle will oxidize and take on the color of the exterior, hiding the damage caused by hail.

If you have any concerns about a woodshake roof, contact ECO Roof and Solar for a FREE inspection today.

Four Seasons Denver Opens With Panache

Although the Four Seasons Denver official ribbon cutting and ceremony was held October 19th, the real grand opening party occurred last night. The Grand Opening Party featured Colorado’s own OneRepublic. The star-studded event was sold out and was one of the highlights of the city’s social season. Taking place on several floors of the Hotel, the gala was a ticketed affair to benefit four longstanding Denver organizations: The Denver Center for Performing Arts, The Denver Zoo, The Kempe Foundation, and The University of Colorado Hospital Foundation benefitting the University of Colorado Cancer Center. OneRepublic was the headliner of the party, and numerous other entertainers performed, including a variety of musical acts, performance artists and others. Attendees enjoyed an open bar and innovative cuisine prepared by Executive Chef Simon Purvis. Tickets were not cheap at $325.00 per person or $200.00 at the increasingly popular young professional option, usually 35 and under.

Denver's LoDo Neighborhood Recognized

DENVER, CO (October 13, 2010)—The American Planning Association (APA) today announced the designation of Denver’s historic Lower Downtown (LoDo) neighborhood as one of 10 Great Neighborhood for 2010 under the organization’s Great Places in America program. APA Great Places exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planners and planning play in creating communities of lasting value.

APA singled out LoDo for its strong political leadership by current and former mayors, historical character and adaptive reuse of warehouse buildings, and use of planning to guide its revitalization.

“This national recognition of Denver’s LoDo district as one of our country’s great places is a welcome reward to the many civic and business leaders in our community whose vision, determination and collaboration over the past 30 years have preserved and revitalized this historic neighborhood,” said Mayor John Hickenlooper. “We thank APA for this great honor.”

Through Great Places in America, APA recognizes unique and authentic characteristics found in three essential components of all communities – streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces. APA Great Places offer better choices for where and how people work and live, and are defined by many things including planning, architectural styles, accessibility and community involvement.

“Seen against the backdrop of heroic historic preservation, the growth our mixed-use neighborhood has seen over the years has been the direct result of the passion and hard work the residents and commercial leaders have poured into the buildings and businesses,” explained LoDo District, Inc. Executive Director, Holly Barrett. “We are honored to receive such wonderful recognition for our incredible community and we wholeheartedly believe it is indeed one of the best places in the world to live and work!”

Since APA began Great Places in America in 2007, 40 neighborhoods, 40 streets and 30 public spaces have been designated in 47 states and the District of Columbia.

“We’re very excited to name LoDo as one of this year’s Great Neighborhoods,” said APA Chief Executive Officer Paul Farmer, FAICP. “The area’s transformation from derelict warehouse district to popular and burgeoning historic neighborhood is the result of visionary city leadership, political fortitude and careful planning,” he added.

Comprising 24 blocks located near the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River, leading LoDo’s emergence as a vibrant neighborhood were several elected officials including current Mayor John Hickenlooper and former Mayor Federico Peña.

Planning also played an important role, including a downtown area plan approved in 1987 and updated in 2007, and a neighborhood plan approved in 2000. The plans underscored the community’s overriding desire to protect the neighborhood and helped address property owners’ concerns and issues raised by opponents.

Helping fund neighborhood improvements was a $240 million bond issue, approved by voters in 1989, that enabled the city to tear down viaducts and dramatically improve the neighborhood’s streetscape.

Founded by General William Larimer, Jr. in 1858, LoDo was originally the birthplace of Denver. It has been called an urban heaven on earth with its celebrated architecture and unique energy. The neighborhood has become a place for sports lovers, history buffs, and social butterflies alike.

On Thursday, October 21 join LoDo District, Inc., the City and County of Denver and the Downtown Denver Partnership for the Award Presentation Ceremony from 4 to 6 p.m. at Fogo de Chao (1513 Wynkoop Street). Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper will be on hand to accept the award on behalf of the City of Denver.

“This award validates the hard work put into the neighborhood by its community leaders over the past few decades,” explained LoDo District, Inc. Chairman, David Cole. “Our members are proud to have been part of a nationally recognized effort that strikes a balance between growth and preservation.”

The nine other APA 2010 Great Neighborhoods are: Downtown Frederick in Frederick, MD; Historic Ninth Street Hill in Lafayette, IN; Back Bay in Boston, MA; The Paseo in Oklahoma City, OK; Cathedral Historic District in Sioux Falls, SD; Frank Lloyd Wright Historic Neighborhood in Oak Park, IL; Historic John S. Park Neighborhood in Las Vegas, NV; Hyde Park in Cincinnati, OH; and Riverside Avondale in Jacksonville, FL.

10 Reasons to Buy a Home

Time magazine is being overly pessimistic in its recent cover piece that called into question the benefits of homeownership. In fact, now is a great time to buy. And, what's more, tomorrow will be a great time to own, because the fundamental strength of homeownership hasn't changed.

Why is now a great time to buy? Here are 10 reasons:

1. You can get a good deal. Prices are down 30 percent on average. They're at a level that makes sense for people's income.
2. Mortgages are cheap. At 4.3 percent on average for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, your costs to own are down by a fifth from two years ago.
3. You can save on taxes. When you add up the deductions for mortgage interest and others, the cost of owning can drop below renting for a comparable place.
4. It'll be yours. The one benefit to owning that never changes is that you can paint your walls orange if you want (generally speaking; there might be some community restrictions). How many landlords will let you do that?
5. You can get a better home. In some markets, it's simply the case that the nicest places are for-sale homes and condos.
6. It offers some inflation protection. Historically, appreciation over time outpaces inflation.
7. It's risk capital. If the economy picks up, you stand to benefit from that, even if you're goal is just to have a nice place to live.
8. It's forced savings. A part of your payment each month goes to equity.
9. There is a lot to choose from. There are some 4 million homes available today, about a year's supply. Now's the time to find something you like and get it.
10. Sooner or later the market will clear. The U.S. is expected to grow by another 100 million people in 40 years. They have to live somewhere. Demand will eventually outpace supply.

Time to Rock & Run

The Denver Marathon has changed names/sponsorship or whatever you call it. It's now called the Denver Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and it will occur on Sunday, October 17th, bright an early. The Rock 'n' Roll marathons are a blast and usually feature a band within every 2-3 miles. I ran the Chicago 1/2 Rock 'n' Roll marathon back in August. It was quite an experience and Chicago is a terrific city. We ran through downtown, past the new beautiful Trump hotel, down to Soldier Field, along Lake Michigan, and through Grant Park. Despite receiving some sad news shortly after finishing, the race itself was a blast.

I wanted to sign up for our hometown's marathon race, but I'll be in Bar Harbor, Maine, cheering on my sister-in-law as she runs the marathon that was voted "most scenic" by Runner's World. I'm excited to cheer her on and see the northeast in all it's colorful glory.

Colorado Wine Fest Weekend Starts Today

One of my favorite fall events is the Colorado Wine Fest, which is usually held in Palisade on the 2nd or 3rd week of September. My husband and I usually head down on Friday and hit a few mountain biking trails in Fruita and then enjoy the festival in the park on Saturday. We've been meeting my parents in Grand Junction for the festivities for 5 years running and it's a blast. The weather has been beautiful each year so far and most of the time, we get to enjoy the changing fall colors along the drive on I-70 through Summit & Eagle County.

Grumpy Old Person Tells It Like It Is

If you are 60, or older, you might think this is hilarious!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill... Barefoot.... BOTH ways… yadda, yadda, yadda.

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!

And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have the Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!

There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox, and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents!

Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our ass! Nowhere was safe!

There were no MP3's or Napsters or iTunes! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself!

Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio, and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it useless. Cause, hey, that's how we rolled, Baby! Dig?

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called, they got a busy signal, that's it!

There weren't any freakin' cell phones either. If you left the house, you just didn't make a call or receive one. You actually had to be out of touch with your "friends." OH MY GOD !!! Think of the horror... not being in touch with someone 24/7!!! And then there's TEXTING. Yeah, right. Please! You kids have no idea how annoying you are.

And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your parents, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, the collection agent... you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy PlayStation or Xbox video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids'. Your screen guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen... Forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel!!! NO REMOTES!!! Oh, no, what's the world coming to?!?!

There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying? We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-finks!

And not many of us had microwaves. If we wanted to heat something up, we had to use the stove! Imagine that!

And our parents told us to stay outside and play... all day long. Oh, no, no electronics to soothe and comfort. And if you came back inside... you were doing chores!

And car seats and seat belts - oh, please! Mom threw you in the back seat and you hung on. If you were lucky, you got the "safety arm" across the chest at the last moment if she had to stop suddenly, and if your head hit the dashboard, well that was your fault for calling "shot gun" in the first place!

See! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled rotten! You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980 or any time before!

Political Joke

George Bush, Queen Elizabeth, and Vladimir Putin all die and go to hell. While there, they spy a red phone and ask what the phone is for. The devil tells them it is for calling back to Earth.

Putin asks to call Russia and talks for 5 minutes. When he is finished the devil informs him that the cost is a million dollars, so Putin writes him a check.

Next Queen Elizabeth calls England and talks for 30 minutes. When she is finished the devil informs her that the cost is 6 million dollars, so she writes him a check.

Finally George Bush gets his turn and talks for 4 hours. When he is finished the devil informs him that the cost is $5.00.

When Putin hears this he goes ballistic and asks the devil why Bush got to call the USA so cheaply.

The devil smiles and replies: "Since Obama took over, the country has gone to hell, so it's a local call.
