Happy New Year!

Wishing all peace, strength, love and contentment as we reflect on the last year and welcome the next. The past year has been a tough one with the personal challenge of the end of my 14 year marriage. I'm feeling uncomfortable and sad, but I'm also optimistic, rebuilding‬ and I'm ready to do this‬...

Original Serenity Prayer as written by Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971)

God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen.

Workplace Trends

"Dedicated offices and oversized square footage are old news, " states Howard Ecker from Howard Ecker + Co. "Even traditional firms want more open space and flexible configurations. Companies now want space that reflects their culture, their ethos and their values."

Howard has 45 years in the commercial real estate industry and fortunately passes along a great deal of his experience and knowledge on to me. What does your office culture say about your company and culture? Work-life balance is paramount in maintaining your successful and productive work force as well as in recruiting new employees.

Do you know what terms such as 'thinking smaller', playing 'musical chairs', 'what is old is new again' mean? Please contact me to help you gain insight on the top 5 trends that are gaining momentum in the workplace now.

Concerned LoDo Neighbors for Equitable Routing of 18th Street Bus Traffic

Hi Blog Followers!

We have created an e-petition to voice our concerns to the RTD staff and Board. We need your help right now. Will you please add your name to the list? It takes 5 seconds. Please keep reading if you would like more information about this important issue.

Whether you live, work or play in LoDo, this WILL effect you. RTD is moving through its public hearing process to reroute the 0 & 15 and create stops for the FreeMetroRide. The City predicts the amount of traffic on 18th Street will go from a current load of 464 in the evening to 695 – a significant portion of this comes from the bus traffic that will quite literally rattle many buildings.

To better explain my current position, I’m a resident in the IceHouse and part of a LoDo community coalition and we are trying to gain support from other neighbors, stakeholders, businesses and friends in the area. We are asking for support for equitable routing of RTD bus traffic through LoDo. RTD is currently planning to route numerous buses from Union Station, directly next to our building/parking garage and down 18th Street.

Recently, I sent out the following notice to many of my friends, neighbors, and the LoDoNA Board of Directors (please feel free to copy and pass along to your network):

We have created an e-petition to voice our concerns to the RTD staff and Board. We need your help right now. Will you please add your name to the list? It takes 5 seconds.

Upon hitting ‘sign’ on the change.org website the wording in the boxed text will be automatically sent to the RTD Board and Staff that will approve or disapprove the route changes.

We are excited that downtown Denver and LoDo continue to be revitalized and experience great new development. The 2 new Union Station wing buildings and redevelopment of Union Station will significantly increase the traffic along 18th and Wynkoop alone. With bus traffic also increasing, we are afraid that our neighborhood will become unbearably congested with additional noise and air pollution. I’m sure that you’ve experienced Rockies traffic in LoDo. Well, RTD has not researched the issue enough and we feel that RTD is not prepared for the problems that will arise. It makes sense to us that more buses can be routed out of LoDo through newer infrastructure via Chestnut vs the historical area of downtown.

We’ve attended the hearings to date and heard all sorts of political explanations as to why other streets can’t take these routes or at least share the burden. This is traffic that LoDo is not used to having on our narrow streets. Some of the parking will be decreased along these areas as well. This is our next best step and we truly appreciate your time and help.

Thank you!
Kirstan, Concerned LoDo Resident

Have you ever wondered 'what is the tallest building in the world?'

There is actually a council that determines this and architects strive for the title. Earlier this month the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) made headlines confirming One World Trade Center's 1,776-foot height. The announcement has One World Trade Center among the top 3 tallest buildings in the world. Here's a great rendering comparing the tallest buildings in the world.

Last week, Howard Ecker, founder of Howard Ecker + Company, talked about the actual business value of being based in the continent’s tallest building on Broker Savant. Howard states that “An iconic building gives you cache.”

We definitely could use more iconic buildings here in Denver. Right now, our most notable are Republic Plaza, 1801 California St (can we get a better name on this one?), the cash register building (also known as Wells Fargo Financial Center), and the Four Seasons Hotel & Private Residences Denver. Found this by Emporis, as it relates to our tallest buildings.

In case you're wondering, (from the CTBUH recent article), the Council measures the height of buildings in three categories:

1. Height to Architectural Top
Height is measured from the level of the lowest, significant, open-air, pedestrian entrance to the architectural top of the building, including spires, but not including antennae, signage, flag poles or other functional-technical equipment. This measurement is the most widely utilized and is employed to define the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat rankings of the "World's Tallest Buildings."

2. Highest Occupied Floor
Height is measured from the level of the lowest, significant, open-air, pedestrian entrance to the finished floor level of the highest occupied6 floor within the building.

3. Height to Tip
Height is measured from the level of the lowest, significant, open-air, pedestrian entrance to the highest point of the building, irrespective of material or function of the highest element (i.e., including antennae, flagpoles, signage and other functional-technical equipment).

The above list might make better sense if you read the entire article...
